I'm Nick, nice to meet ya =]. I'm a fairly optimistic person (when i can be =P) who would love to experience the world - without causing my family to, you know, not be able to eat. I always push myself to the limits, often WAY overscheduling myself. But pressure is fun sometimes. I'm a pianist. Piano is my way of relaxing, destressing, and expressing myself. Boy Scouts gives me a channel to lead and teach other Scouts in not just random knots, but life skills. I'm very involved in choir (GO BASSES!) and band program. Life is good =] (ps-vid is me playin piano man freshman year @ choir concert
I am a contestant in the 2010 Sweet Diggity Dawg Scholarship Contest. And I'm here to dominate.
All throughout one's Boy Scouting career, the program and his home troop gives much to the Scout. His troop should push him to become a better leader, he should receive guidance, he should learn how to be a better person.
Upon making Eagle Scout, however, the focus changes: no longer is Scouting expected to give to you, but you are expected to give to Scouting.
Despite this important distinction, I had given back much to my fellow Scouts and community even before attaining that goal. As the leader of my troop for 3 years, I helped improve the lives of many young boys. When I was as young as 12, I was helping the Scouts advance through the ranks. And the leadership skills I learned have branched to other areas of my life; music, community, extracurriculars, even just with friends. I have tried to live my life in such a way that in everything I do, I am constantly helping someone else, constantly giving back. This scholarship will help me continue this goal throughout my entire life.
Henry Clay, Eric Whitacre, and my granddaddy (mom's side).
For those who have taken AP US History, you know that Henry Clay seemed to never die. He also seemed to pop up with great ideas and compromises at random times. And he always seemed to be able to persuade people to agree with him and push his policies through. I'd love to learn some of these skills so I could better inspire people around me.
Eric Whitacre, for those who aren't into choral stuff, is an AMAZING contemporary composer. I LOVE singing his stuff, and he's inspired me to compose choral music. The way he can bring out moods in his audience just with a simple chord of voices and a nice vowel is incredible. I'd love to learn how he does that so I could have that effect on people.
My Granddaddy died when I was 5; I never really got to know him. The stories I've heard make me wish I had. He owned an apple farm in upstate NY, and was a genius with wit, environment, and - through frugality - money. I'd love to talk to hi
So many superpowers to choose from. Let's see... what would be cool.
1. While everyone is probably saying this, I can't begin to describe how awesome it would be to fly. Except I'm thinking not so much like a bird, more like... Neo from the Matrix or Superman. Being able to feel that free from the amount of stress on the ground and being able to see the world from a foreign point of view would be awesome.
2. Electricity powers - Okay, so I'm a bit odd.. and being into filmmaking and stuff, I'm constantly having visions about turning things into movies. One such thing I often imagine while watching a thunderstorm from my front porch is going into the middle of my lawn, throwing my hands up, and watching lightning shoot out of my fingers. Can anybody say EPIC? =D
3. The ability to walk up to someone and know exactly how to persuade them to think like me. I'm confident that I can change the world in some way... and persuasion power would make that vision much simpler. =]
Million dollars and had to spend it on myself? I don't even know if I could do that. I mean, okay, I'd spend some on college (obviously), update my computer, maybe get a car... but then I still have atLEAST $900,000 left. I'd probably take whatever contract I had and analyze it till I found a loophole letting me give it to others... then, I'd set up my parents for life, help my little brother with his college education, help out my school district for better education, help out my boy scout troop a TON... the goal would be to give as much back to the community as possible. I couldn't spend a million dollars on myself if I.. well, no, I probably COULD if I tried, but I don't think i'd be able to.
In all honesty, I would change very little about history. While there are obviously SO many hellacious things that happened in history, I believe that every experience the human race has gone through has shaped us as a people, a society, a culture. While it would be nice if my family were rich or something, if that were the case, I wouldn't be the person I am today. If WWII had never happened, where would our world be now? Who knows.
Through my experience, I've learned that everything that happens happened for some reason. It really sucked for a few months Freshman year when I broke up with my 'girlfriend' (alas... tweenage dating.. =P) and lost a ton of friends... but it shaped me into who I am now. It changed the people I hung out with, and has changed it through now. Without that, I might be without the amazing friends I have... I'd be so different. So while there are some hard times, in the end, it all turns out okay. I think that life is like a movie.
So I would change nothing.

I agree with your Henry Clay idea. He was one of our "to be defined" word choices on four succesive AP US quizzes.
