Sewanee: The University of the South
Welcome to Sewanee: The University of the South, home of one of the nation's top liberal arts colleges, a School of Letters, and a seminary of the Episcopal Church.Known simply as "Sewanee" by its students, faculty, staff and friends, the University offers an unmatched educational experience. The University remains purposefully small and dedicated to building a sense of community. The University has had 26 Rhodes Scholars--a number that puts Sewanee in the top four nationally among American liberal arts colleges--as well as 26 NCAA Postgraduate Fellows, 36 Watson Fellows, and dozens of Fulbright Scholars, and has an acceptance rate to graduate and professional schools that far outpaces its peers. Sewanee offers 36 majors, 27 minors, and 15 special programs, along with pre-medicine, pre-nursing, pre-law, and pre-business. More than 40 percent of students participate in study-abroad programs, and a comprehensive endowed program that provides financial support for summer internships has greatly strengthened career development for undergraduates.

- 76Azaline GunnAlso, what is the average accepted GPA for a student who is involved in some extra-curriculars? (band, theatre, stage crew, choir, GSA, and Heritage Panel, if that matters.)
- 137Josh KingHello, Azaline--Thanks for your questions. At Sewanee, you aren't required to declare your major until second semester sophomore year. By that time, you will have had a year and a half to explore the sciences and theatre arts--among other disciplines--and should be well-informed and ready to choose a major. To fully understand the flexibility of Sewanee's curriculum, take a look at this page: http://academics.sewanee.edu/curriculum/. As for your second question, the mean GPA for a student admitted to Sewanee in the Class of 2015 was a 3.6. All of our admitted students participate in extracurricular activities on some level, so that GPA is the best guideline we can offer. Best, Josh

- 257Hi Michelle, we do not actually have a criminal justice program at Sewanee. We do, however, have 95% acceptance rate in to law school if that is something you would be interested in pursuing. Regardless of what you want to major in, you should continue to consider Sewanee as our broad based liberal arts curriculum is great preparation for whatever career field you actually go into.

- 257Hi Ty, we do have a Computer Science major that can either stand alone or become a part of the 3/2 Engineering Program. In which you would attend Sewanee for 3 (or 4) years to complete a major in computer science before transferring to either Vanderbilt, Columbia, RPI, or Washington University in St. Louis to complete a 2 year intensive computer engineering degree. Upon graduation you would have two Bachelor's degrees - one from Sewanee and one from the other institution you attended.

- 80Brenda, Sewanee's literary tradition is long and rich. From the Sewanee Review to our Writer's Conferences to our writing requirements outside of our English courses, you will find that writing is not just something that we do at Sewanee but something that we embrace. Students interested in writing major in English and many choose to pursue our certificate in Creative Writing. You can read more about our English department and the certificate at http://english.sewanee.edu/. I would also encourage you to check-out The Family Fang, a book by a member of our English faculty that spent many weeks on the NYT Best Seller list. http://nyti.ms/riVEbf

- 80Silvia, thank you for your interest in Sewanee! Our office will be sending out decisions to our Early Action applicants in just a couple weeks. If you have taken the SAT already, please feel free to submit those scores to us. The next available SAT test is in March, so that test would be too late for consideration for our Early Action decisions. I hope that information helps. Please let us know if we can answer any other questions!
