Application Overview:
Essay with cover sheet (containing applicant's contact information). Select ONE of the following three topics:
* The Communist war hero and much feared Party member Andrei Taganov is completely dedicated to the Party��s cause. Why then does he lose respect for the Party �� and why does he fall in love with Kira Argounova?
* Although the USSR has collapsed, many people still argue what was argued throughout much of the 20th century: communism is a noble theory that men unfortunately fail to live up to in practice. By reference to the story and specific events of We the Living, explain why you think the novel��s author would accept or reject this argument.
* What does Kira Argounova mean when she says that communism forbids ��life to those still living��?
Essay must be no fewer than 700 and no more than 1,500 words in length, and double-spaced. Essays will be judged on both style and content. Judges will look for writing that is clear, articulate and logically organized. Winning essays must demonstrate an outstanding grasp of the philosophic meaning of We the Living.
Eligibility:
Entrant must be in the 10th, 11th or 12th grade. Employees of the Ayn Rand Institute, its board of directors and their immediate family members are not eligible for this contest. Past first place winners are not eligible for this contest.
Purpose:
Ayn Rand's novels are inspiring and intellectually challenging. But they can also be financially rewarding for high school and college students. The Ayn Rand Institute sponsors annual essay contests that offer prizes and prize money every year.
