Purpose:
The idea for Share Your Story was borne from my volunteer work at Crenshaw High School in South Central Los Angeles. The students at this school define the term underserved. While helping seniors brainstorm to start their college essays, I quickly discovered that most of my students had no idea how to answer or structure the common essay questions about their lives, dreams, inspirations and accomplishments. I tried to find relevant examples of college essays written by low income or minority students, however all of the existing How to essay compilation books include personal statements written mainly by students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds about topics that my students did not connect with. As I worked with students on crafting their personal statements, more and more inspiring stories unfolded: each ended with the same of hope and dream attending college to forever change the authors future. I realized that I was in one of thousands of schools across the country filled with students of different cultural backgrounds but similar demographics, and that the college essays that these students produced would provide a valuable resource for anyone who works with underserved students. Determined to have these students voices heard, create an educational resource, and to also develop a much needed scholarship fund, I created Share Your Story.
