Application Overview:
* You must submit a written statement from your parent, guardian, or teacher certifying that the essay is your own original work.
* Submissions received without this certification will be disqualified. Your essay should concentrate on the theme. Essays will be judged on originality; scholarship, including works cited; and presentation, including correct grammar and spelling.
* You should not neglect any of these categories. The Fund historically receives a large number of entries and the contest is highly competitive.
* All essays should be about 1,000 words, neat, and legible (double spaced, typed preferred).
Eligibility:
The contest is open to all students enrolled, or who will be enrolled, in an elementary, junior high or high school during the current academic year, or homeschooled students in an equivalent grade level, who have not previously received a prize in the senior category. A previous winner in the junior category, who is now eligible for the senior category, may submit an entry.
Purpose:
The NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund (NRACRDF) is once again sponsoring an essay contest celebrating the Second Amendment as an integral part of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The theme for the essay is ��The Second Amendment to the Constitution: Why it is important to our nation.�� Scholarship awards are given in saving bonds.

Background:
The NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund was established by the NRA Board of Directors in 1978 to become involved in court cases establishing legal precedents in favor of gun owners. To accomplish this, the Fund provides legal and financial assistance to selected individuals and organizations defending their right to keep and bear arms. Additionally, the Fund sponsors legal research and education on a wide variety of firearms related issues, including the meaning of the Second Amendment and nature of the right to keep and bear arms provisions in state constitutions.
