Application Overview:
* Registration form (including teacher information)
* 1000-1250-word essay on the following topic: You are a Foreign Service employee posted to one of the nations/organizations listed below. Explain what you would do as a diplomat in the U.S. Foreign Service to improve the relations between the U.S. and your country/organization of choice, and how the major foreign policy differences between them might best be handled in our national interest. The nations/organizations on which you may choose to focus are: Afghanistan; Cuba; Egypt; Japan; Pakistan; South Sudan; The United Nations; Venezuela.
* Essays must be an original work written in English. Entries must be typed, double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman or an equivalent font with a one-inch margin on all sides of the page. All submissions must include a word count, excluding the list of sources. AT LEAST three of the sources you cite must be primary sources, i.e. books, periodicals or newspapers that you have physically researched. Other sources may be online-only materials, provided they are cited correctly as such. Any submissions lacking three primary sources will be disqualified. Note: Any essay using sources such as Wikipedia will be disqualified! Please make sure to also separate your primary source list from your Internet source list. Do not place your name or your school's name on any of the pages of the essay. Only the registration form should include this information. Essays MUST be submitted in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) format. Essays submitted in any other format will not be considered.
Eligibility:
* Open to all high school students whose parents are NOT IN the Foreign Service.
* Must be a U.S. citizen
* Children of the employees of AFSA, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Semester at Sea are ineligible.
Purpose:
This contest is to help young Americans better understand how the men and women of the Foreign Service serve and defend our critical national interests around the globe, possibly leading many participants to consider international careers in service to our country.

With over 15,000 dues-paying members, AFSA represents over 28,000 active and retired Foreign Service employees of the Department of State and Agency for International Development (AID), as well as smaller groups in the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), U.S. & Foreign Commercial Service (FCS), and International Broadcasting Bureau (IBB).
