  • The Goldilocks Effect
  • Researchers at the University of Rochester have uncovered a new finding about how babies understand and investigate the environment around them. Dubbed the "Goldilocks effect", their research shows that infants in the study are not interested in things that are too simple or too complex, but just right. The study followed the attention patterns of 72 seven and eight month olds using an eye-tracking device while they viewed a series of different animations on a screen. When the pattern of objects appearing on the screen was too predictable or too complex the babies tended to lose interest, but they looked longer at patterns that fell right in the middle. Lead author of the paper on the findings Celeste Kidd is a doctoral candidate and has been doing research in the Rochester Baby Lab along with postdoctoral fellow Steven Piantadosi, who developed the statistical model that they used to predict and quantify the behaviors. Dr. Richard Aslin, a professor of brain and cognitive sciences at the University and Principle Investigator at the lab co-authored the study. He believes that the finding could have broad implications for human learning at all ages and lead to earlier diagnosis of attention-related disabilities such as autism or attention deficit disorder.
