The UNC at Chapel Hill, founded in 1789, is a public, comprehensive institution. Programs are offered through the College of Arts and Sciences, the Kenan-Flagler Business School, the Division of Continuiting Education, the Graduate School, and the Schools of Dentistry, Education, Information and Library Science, Journalism and Mass Communication, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Social Work. Its 729-acre campus is located in Chapel Hill, eight miles northeast of Durham, and includes that two oldest state university buildings.

- 2012 UNC School of Medicine Commencement
- On Saturday, May 12, 2012, the UNC School of Medicine commencement ceremony took place at Memorial Hall, with 165 new Doctors of Medicine joining the ranks of UNC School of Medicine alumni. The Class of 2012 chose Cheryl McNeil, MD, as commencement speaker and Dr. Anthony Charles and Dr. Edward Kernick hooded the graduates. Facts about the Class of 2012: • 90% of the class did community service while in medical school. • 73% conducted research as medical students. • Collectively, this class can communicate in 22 languages from Arabic to Urdu and including Cantonese, Mandarin, Gujarati, Haitian Creole, Igbo, and Swahili. • One third of the class can communicate with patients in Spanish. • As medical students, they have volunteered or conducted research in over 27 different countries. Congratulations to our 165 newest alumni from the UNC School of Medicine!

- Family House Diaries: Collin and Gayle Peterjohn
- During a kitchen fire early January 12, Collin Peterjohn sustained 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 15 percent of his body as well severe lung damage. But before he even knew he was injured, he helped get his family to safety. An act for which his mother refers to him as a "hero." Collin is part of a small subset of burn patients who have to go on an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine so their damaged lungs can rest and heal while the ECMO machine takes over breathing.
