U Massachusetts at Amherst is a public, land-grant institution. Founded as an agricultural college in 1863, it became a state university in 1947. Programs are offered through the Colleges of Engineering, Food and Natural Resources, Humanities and Fine Arts, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Social and Behavioral Sciences; the Schools of Education, Management, Nursing, Public Health and Health Sciences; and the Division of Interdisciplinary Studies. Its 1,463-acre campus is located in Amherst, 20 miles north of Springfield and 90 miles west of Boston.

- UMass Amherst chemistry professor Craig Martin wants the world to know that molecules are beautiful, so he created a unique interactive molecular playground where players can twirl, flip, rotate and re-size colorful models of chemicals including a zero-calorie fat substitute and a flu vaccine. The idea has caught on. There are now molecular playgrounds at the Springfield (Mass.) Science Museum, St. Olaf College in Minnesota and at science centers in San Francisco, Spain and Japan.
