:( What a pity that Babson doesn't give financial aid to international students. I wish I could get to that school, but without the chance of obtaining the scholarship I won't be able...

Academics

Classes are definitely interesting; if anyone disagrees, he or she should look to transfer since the class is tailored well to business and entrepreneurship. Some liberal arts classes are boring, and some are a nice break from business, business, and business. Teachers are great, all with different personalities, but they are all experienced and in the right position.

Athletics

Sports are so small here. I am a huge fan of sports, and I have no idea what goes on with sports. I feel that this is a huge determination of just how unimportant sports are at Babson. The only thing that is fairly important is men’s basketball, which I do cheer for during the season. Intramural is real fun. I do it for basketball and softball, however, you only get four games, and more than likely, one will get cancelled. However, that is still okay since it is just for fun.

Campus Dining

There is a large variety of food to pick from, but it doesn’t seem very nutritious to me because I like cooking homemade food. Trim does try to provide variety for students by organizing festive dinners about once every two weeks. Examples from the past include Mardi Gras, Chinese, Russian, Indian, and Hawaiian home-styled food. The cheesecake at Trim is delicious, but most of the other desserts are not on my favorites list. Sodexo Services is a very prestigious catering group, but I wish that they offered more variety on a daily basis.

Campus Housing

Dorms are okay. The suites are great, and so are the upper-campus dorms. The park manors are good. I would avoid Forest (although that is a designated dorm), Publishers, and Bryant (because it’s so far away from everything). The grounds crew does a great job keeping the garbage changed and the bathrooms clean.

Campus Strictness

Campus police are very hot and cold. Sometimes it seems that they’re breaking up every room with a stereo on, and sometimes there’s a DJ blasting music outside with public drinking, and BABO doesn’t do anything about it. It usually depends on what kind of vandalism or misbehavior happened recently. If people are respecting the campus property, campus security is very lenient. If there have been recent incidents, they usually crack down.

Computers

Babson provides all its students with the same laptops, so it is not hard to carry your own computer around. The library is seldom completely full, and I can always find an open computer to print my homework from, even if it’s five minutes before class starts. And if the class is at Olin (the graduate school), there is a large computer lab on the first floor that I’ve used before. This huge accessibility to computers is especially helpful when your presentation group forgets to print out slides and you need to run to a lab and print it out during class.

Diversity

Well, the campus is quite diverse. There are white people, and there are whiter people. But seriously, there is not a lot of diversity in terms of race, but quite a bit of thought diversity; which is more important. There is a campus Republicans club and a corresponding College Democrats club. There is everything from the Black Student Union to the Russian Club.

Drug Scene

In my experience, the drug scene basically consists of marijuana. I haven’t come across any hard drugs in my time here. Marijuana isn’t widespread, but it is definitely a presence on campus.

Facilities

The facilities on campus are all top-notch. Babson’s landscaping crew never sleeps, and all of our dorms have recently been upgraded with wireless Internet. Students also have access to several business tools, such as Bloomberg, in the Cutler Center.

Greek Life

A couple of the fraternities throw some of the best parties. TKE definitely is the most ridiculous fraternity and the only fraternity that any of the athletic teams like. The sororities rarely throw parties but Chi-Oh and Kappa definitely go searching for parties—and guys—the most.

Guys & Girls

The people are cool. Sometimes, they are very stuck up, especially the international students. The international students are fashionable. Babson isn’t exactly known for the hotness of its students, it’s known for the brains.

Local Atmosphere

Wellesley is a very small town, so I prefer to travel into Boston if I want to get away from the college atmosphere here. There is much more to do in the city. The clubbing and the bar scenes are great, and it’s only 15 minutes away. I remember walking around Wellesley a couple of times: once to get a haircut and once to stop by a convenience shop to get some nail polish remover. I also visit the Stop & Shop once in a while on the weekends, but I eat on campus, so I don’t have to go there too often.

Nightlife

Babson police are usually good about letting parties go till at least midnight, and can either be real cool about a party, or write up everybody there who’s under 21. You can never really tell how they will handle the situation. At the beginning and end of the year, when the weather gets better, parties usually gather and end up outside around the barbeque grills, which is cool because pretty much everyone on campus will be there. The school-sponsored ‘Knight Party’ is also a school-wide party that everyone goes to wasted. Nightlife at Babson is fun for a school of its size. If it ever sounds like it’s going to be a quiet weekend, students can always go into Boston and find something to do.

Off-Campus Dining

Bertucci’s is really close, and Domino’s always delivers, which is important. Several other local pizza and sub places are near as well, so there are plenty of food choices in the Wellesley area. Domino’s delivery service seems like they personally know me, because they have a computer system that picks up people who made previous orders. It’s cool that they have such a close tie to Babson, because it saves time ordering food.

Off-Campus Housing

Most students live on campus because it’s more convenient. A lot of students are in clubs or on sports teams, so it would be hard to make it to all the meetings and find time for traveling. There are lots of speakers that come to campus, too, so it would be hard to attend those if one has to travel back and forth.

Overall Experience

I love Babson. It is not a college for those who wish to do no work, not attend class, or just party. It is a school for people who want to do well in life. Babson trains people for the rigorous business world. I would not rather be at any other college. The education here is priceless, especially because much of it is ‘hands-on,’ and I feel it’s good practice for my future career.

Parking

Compared to other colleges, Babson has a great parking scene. There is parking for all four years and students can keep up to two cars on campus. Depending on what dorm you live in, parking can be very convenient or a hike, too.

Safety & Security

I feel safer at Babson than at any other place I’ve lived. The student body is generally respectful of others’ belongings, and the campus police are very responsive to calls. I’ve never heard of anything unusual happening in terms of a security breach, except one time we got an e-mail from public safety telling the campus that someone had been walking around damaging cars in the Trim parking lot.

Transportation

Our public transportation is kind of tough. There is a T to get into Boston, but it is eight miles away. We used to have a bus that goes there on weekends. The T stops at 1 p.m. So you can’t really stay out really late unless you have a car or a lot of cab money.

Weather

The weather here is as predictable as Florida tornadoes. Sometimes the snow comes and stays, and other times it melts right away and it feels like spring for about a week when it’s really January. Weather predictions here are senseless, so be prepared for all kinds of weather changes. It’s a good idea to bring an umbrella for the fall and many pairs of warm shoes, coats, and hats for the winter.

Fiske Descriptions

The only college in the Fiske Guide devoted entirely to business. Only 11 miles from College Student Mecca, a.k.a. Boston, and tougher to get into now than at any time in its history. The one college in Massachusetts where it is possible to be a Republican with head held high.

School summary

Babson, founded in 1919, is a private college of business administration and management. Its 370-acre campus is located in Wellesley, 12 miles from Boston.
