  • Mary Ann Prater Barbeque Baseball Tailgate -- May 5, 2012
  • Over 60 attendees joined Mary Ann "MA" Prater to enjoy a baseball tailgate in her honor on Saturday, May 5, 2012. The tailgate celebrated her retirement after 30 years of teaching. Over the past year, many of her friends, family, colleagues, and alumni raised nearly $110000 in her honor for a naming opportunity in the School of Accountancy, Finance, and Legal Studies. In addition, one anonymous alum created a $100000 endowment in her honor for the School. MA threw out the first pitch during the baseball game that evening. View Photos www.flickr.com

  • Long live the longleaf
  • TJ Savereno: Longleaf pine historically was the dominant ecosystem in the Southeast. It covered nine states from Southeastern Virginia all the way down in an arc around to Eastern Texas. It covered about ninety million acres, today it is down to about seven million acres and a lot of that habitat is fragmented. It is one of the most ecologically diverse habitats in the world. It home to many different plant species and a number of endangered species as well. Longleaf pine provides a good economic investment because of the value of the products that can be obtained from it. It tends to be a longer-lived, tight-grained species that produces a very high-quality wood. It also produces a higher percentage of what are called poles, which are the types of timber that are harvested for creation of power poles. Timber production is one of the top industries in South Carolina and it employs quite a few people and it is especially important to the rural economy in South Carolina. What we are trying to do here is to create an environment where we can do research on longleaf pine restoration under a variety of starting points and, also be able to bring landowners in and show them how you can go about doing that, how to do it successfully.

  • Strawberries: a berry good business
  • Tony Melton: Working with the Poston Farm has really been a great experience. He is a great grower, he listens to me and he learns from what we do. We started out when he was first beginning to grow strawberries and I got to show him how to grow them, then he became better and better at it; and now I still help him once a week and they are doing a wonderful job of growing some of the best and tastiest strawberries and selling them here, right at the Lake City Farmer's Market. Jimmy Poston: I called Tony to help me in 1989, when I first put my strawberries in. He came out and told me what I needed to do. He was involved from that, even through telling me who I needed to contact and get my irrigation material from. And ever since then, we count on Tony to come out and check our fields for viruses and insects, also to help us find markets. Tony does a wonderful job for us, I don't know how I could survive without him, I guess we could but I wouldn't want to try.
