I love to expand my mind through reading. Ever since I can remember I have had a book in my hands, and I never want that to change! Reading allows you to live another life or be someone else for a while; it can take you on great adventures or inspire you to become something. I believe that reading has had a very positive impact on my life: it has taught me new things, made me think, "Hey, what would I do in that situation?", and inspired me to become a writer to create more wonderful books to fill the shelves of young readers like me.
Extracurricular
- Journalism
- Writing has always been my passion, so becoming a part of the school newspaper staff was a no-brainer! My first year on the staff I won three individual state awards. My second year on the staff I became the News Editor, and next year I hope to become E
- Quiz Bowl
- Quiz Bowl is one of my favorite school activities! I love Jeopardy, so it seems reasonable that I would love spending two lunch periods a week being quizzed on random facts. I should be one of the starting four players this year, and I can't wait to sho
- National Honor Society
- This year I was one of 15 students, out of a class of 105, inducted into the National Honor Society at our school. Membership is based on grades and community involvement. I have participated at Math Night at our elementary school, babysitting younger s
- Ski Club
- Since my freshman year I have been involved with our school's Ski Club. Even though it is called SKI Club I enjoy snowboarding instead. There is nothing like the feeling of flying down the hill, with the wind blowing back my hair - until I hit an ice bl
- Student Council
- I have been involved in Student Council since 7th grade. I was 10th grade class president last year, and this year I am 11th grade class secretary. I will never forget staying after school to hang up posters announcing that my three best friends and I w
- Spanish Club
- In 9th grade, our Spanish Club attended an International Festival, went on a field trip to a Spanish restaurant, and ate many early-morning breakfasts at school together. We also sold cookie dough and flowers to raise money for the club. I really hope t
- Speech and Debate Team
- Last year I took the Speech and Debate Class offered at our school and participated in the county Speech Contest and Debate Contest. I gave a speech on grade point averages and read a passage from my favorite book. I am really glad that I took this clas
- Volunteer at Local Library
- Most Wednesdays after school I spend my afternoon at our local library. I mainly just shelve and label books, but because I love to read this is actually an enjoyable experience.
- Math Night Instructor
- I volunteered as a teacher for our elementary school's math nights this year. It was rewarding to watch the kids learn. One of the puzzles I had to teach was so hard, I had trouble figuring it out!
- Conferences Babysitter
- I volunteered as a babysitter during our elementary's parent/teacher conferences. I was really nervous, but the kids and I started a game of "Heads Up Seven Up" and the time flew by!
- Blood Drive Sign-In
- Even though I was two weeks too young to give blood, I wanted to help at our school's annual blood drive. So instead of being poked, I signed people up to be poked!
- Relay For Life Yard Sale
- Instead of attending my junior prom, my best friend and I held a yard sale for Relay for Life. It was fun to negotiate prices with buyers and we made a lot of money for cancer research.
- 10th Grade Class President
- When I ran for class president in 10th grade I ran on a platform with my three best friends. Together, we figured, we could do great things for the school. So the day before the election, we went around the school and hung up flyers we'd made with rando
- 11th Grade Class Secretary
- I have been involved in Student Council since 7th grade. Every year we work to organize food drives, blood drives, hat days, dances, and parades. This year, with the encouragement of the Student Council, our school brought in over 12,000 items for a foo
- News Editor of School Paper
- My second year on the school newspaper staff I became the News Editor. I am responsible for assigning stories and due dates, and editing stories, layout pages, and so much more. However, this really doesn't seem like a job to me because I love being on
