Thank you to all of you that have offered to assist to help Haiti in its recovery after the earthquake. I and our Valencia Volunteers staff have been researching the ways to maximize our contributions now and in the near future. Hereโs an update on our progress.
First, if you know of students that are having a difficult time please send them to Student Services at your campus. Each campus has counselors and other resources to assist students in need.
Next, How you can help now? Use your cell phone and computer right now to help via texting and making donations: โข Text "YELE" to 501501 to donate $5 for Haitian Relief (Wyclef Jean's Yele Foundation) โข Text "HAITI" to 90999 to donate $10 (American Red Cross). โข Catholic Relief Services - www.crs.org or 1-888-277-7575. โข UNICEF requests donations for relief for children in Haiti via their Haiti Earthquake Fund. Donate any amount to help their efforts. doctorswithoutborders.org/ โข Go to Redcross.org and click Donate or call (800) REDCROSS. Another resource for local organizations is the Orlando Sentinel http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/os-box-2-orlando-helps-haiti-20100114,0,6343224.story
Later: Student Development, the Valencia Volunteers, SGA, Bridges and VaSHA (Valencia Haitian Student Association) are also creating partnerships with UCFโs Engineers Without Borders, their Haitian Student Association (Creole), Evans High School and several local churches. We will be conducting a supply drive next week on each campus. Details as to drop off locations and a supply list will go out on Friday, January 15.
We are also meeting to plan how Valencia can assist in the future but right now what every agency needs is cash. I know many of you are struggling financially right now. Please find it in your heart to make the sacrifice to make a contribution to whomever you feel will do the most to help our friends and families in Haiti.
Updates as to our progress to follow.
In your service, Victor Collazo vcollazo@valenciacc.edu
