Open to ALL high school students in grades 9-12, not only those taking video production. Winners will be selected based on ideas. And you all have great ideas. High school students nationally can participate; emphasis is placed on concept and the message, not on production values. Students are encouraged to use whatever video equipment is available to them. Teachers and principals, school audio/visual departments, parent and community leaders are urged to share their equipment and lend local support by promoting the program as a very unique scholarship competition that is fun to participate in and has a powerful impact on a serious problem.
Application Overview
Create a 30-second commercial to warn middle school students about the dangers of underage drinking. There are two ways you may enter your commercial:
- Upload video entry to the Internet (i.e., YouTube, Vimeo, or SchoolTube) along with the completion of the online entry form;
or
- Mail the entry form and DVD/VHS to Courageous Persuaders.
Purpose
Each year, more than 10,000 young people, ages 16 to 25, die as a result of alcohol use. It is a tragic problem. As early as grade school, kids feel pressure to drink. Sometimes, the courage to say "no" can come from an older kid. In Courageous Persuaders, high school students create television commercials targeted at middle school students to warn them about the dangers of alcohol use. Students compete for scholarship money and trophies. The grand prize-winning commercial actually airs on TV as a public service announcement. Participants gain valuable experience, are honored in a Hollywood-style awards banquet and, most importantly, have an opportunity to save lives.

It takes a lot of determination and courage to forge ahead when sometimes it would be easier to give up. With the "Courage to Grow Scholarship" we strive to help students achieve their higher education goals. By taking away some of the concerns such as "how will I pay for college", students can concentrate on their education and focus on the task at hand. Today's economy is hard enough on a family, it is our desire to ease some of the financial burden that a college education can put on individuals and their families.

Purpose
The idea for Share Your Story was borne from my volunteer work at Crenshaw High School in South Central Los Angeles. The students at this school define the term “underserved”. While helping seniors brainstorm to start their college essays, I quickly discovered that most of my students had no idea how to answer or structure the common essay questions about their lives, dreams, inspirations and accomplishments. I tried to find relevant examples of college essays written by low income or minority students, however all of the existing “How to” essay compilation books include personal statements written mainly by students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds about topics that my students did not connect with. As I worked with students on crafting their personal statements, more and more inspiring stories unfolded: each ended with the same of hope and dream – attending college to forever change the author’s future. I realized that I was in one of thousands of schools across the country filled with students of different cultural backgrounds but similar demographics, and that the college essays that these students produced would provide a valuable resource for anyone who works with underserved students. Determined to have these students’ voices heard, create an educational resource, and to also develop a much needed scholarship fund, I created Share Your Story.

The QuestBridge National College Match is designed for high school seniors who have shown outstanding academic ability despite facing economic challenges. Most College Match scholarship recipients come from households earning less than $60,000 annually (for a typical family of four) and have experienced long-term economic hardship.
We do not have absolute criteria for GPA, standardized test scores, or income. When selecting finalists for the National College Match, we try to answer the following questions:
* "Does this student have the motivation and academic ability to thrive at one of our partner colleges?"
* "Has this student overcome socio-economic obstacles to achieve academic excellence?"

The United States depends on knowledgeable and thoughtful students—the next generation of leaders—to build peace with freedom and justice among nations and peoples. In the belief that questions about peace, justice, freedom, and security are vital to civic education, the United States Institute of Peace established the National Peace Essay Contest to expand educational opportunities for young Americans.
